Portfolios titled: Portfolio I, Original Leaves from the Bible in Indigenous Languages Portfolio II, Original Leaves from the bible in English from the Eighteenth Century Portfolio III, Original Leaves from the Bible in English from the Nineteenth Century Portfolio IV, Original Leaves from the Bible in Other Languages This important historical record is split into four portfolios by date or by theme, covering two centuries and over a dozen indigenous and immigrant languages of North America. The languages included comprise those of the Cherokee, Choctaw, Dakota, and Hawaiians, as well as Bibles in German, Greek, Hebrew, Dutch, Swedish, and more, including the first American Bible printed for the blind. The first folio includes leaves from the 1663 Eliot Bible in the indigenous language sometimes referred to as Massachusett, the first Bible in any language printed in America. This history of the translation of scripture into indigenous languages, meant to produce converts, also produced an invaluable record of indigenous languages in print, supplementing existing cultural knowledge and language conservation efforts in the Americas.
