In the second, dated October, 1974, and contained within its original mailing envelope, Morris states that his book The Paper Maker had been so successful that he could not even supply it to some of his regular customers. The Commonplace Book is a collection of typically hilarious, irreverent, and often ribald essays on making paper from wasps' nests, brothel tokens, making paper from junk mail, and American toilet papers, as well as a selection of poems on papermaking.
