The Co. Cavan “Smith” CollectionofIrish Antiquities and later Artefact’sAn extremely good Collection of Irish Stone & Bronze age Antiquities, and later Artefacts, collected by The Smith Family, Kevitt Castle, Co. Cavan, in the 1930 – 1950’s. It includes axe heads, spear heads, arrow heads, adze’s etc., early rock examples, iron rush lights, swords, bayonet etc. The collection includes the following:64 – 1 A very fine bronze Spear Head, of early type, with narrow solid blade, decorated with strong centre rib in a sunk panel, and with wide socket, with loops at base, 19.5cms (7 3/4″) long.64-3 An unusual flanged bronze Palstave or Axe Head with strong and deep side flanges, incorporating a deep stop ridge, the centre of the blade decorated with double reeded channels, approx. 17cms (6 3/4″) long.64-5 A small Irish bronze Axe Head, with flat body, of typical design, approx 8.5cms (3 1/2″) long.64-4 A small early polished stone Axe Head, with perforated end, approx. 9.5cms (3 3/4″) long. 65-6 A small polished basalt Axe Head, approx. 9.75cms (3 3/4″) long.71 A large stone Axe Head of polished flint, approx. 19cms (7 1/2″) long.70 A large Vitrified glazed Stone, found at Loughoter Castle by Paddy Story, Sept. ‘38.65-3 A small early perforated stone Adze, approx. 13.5cms (5 1/2″)61-1 A large polished perforated stone Adze or Mace, with large chip, approx. 14cms (5 1/2″).65-2 A small granite Axe Head, approx. 12.5cms (5″).68 A very large Axe Head of polished basalt, with broad cutting edge, the sides tapering towards the butt, and of oval form, some chips, 27.5cms (10 3/4″) long.64-1 An early tile Fragment, found at Loughoter Castle by Paddy Story, Sept. ‘38.65.6 A small polished stone Axe Head, 9.5cms (3 3/4″) long. 64.2 An early iron Arrow Head, with part bamboo shaft.73-1, 68 Two 18th Century twisted iron Rush Light Holders, one on large wooden shaft, the other on a smaller wooden shaft.65-4, 69 An example of pink basalt from Giants Causeway, with label dated ’16; and 6 varied other stone samples.A late 18th Century Artillery, Indian Pattern steel Plug Bayonet, the blade inscribed ‘Hill’, 43cms (17″) long. A very good later bronze Sword, with fine broad leaf shaped blade, and complete handle plate, which is pierced for six rivets, 62.5cms (24 1/2″) long. As a collection, w.a.f.Provenance: By direct descent to the present owner.
