The Engagement (Aghd) of Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi to Princess Fawzia Faud of Egypt , poster [printed and circulated in Iran, shortly after 24 Esfand 1317 (30 March 1939)] single sheet, depicting (from left to right) Queen Farida and King Farouk of Egypt, Princess Fawzia and Crown Prince Mohammed Reza, and Queen Mother Nazli, together in Cairo's Abdin Palace, slightly faded along old horisontal fold, extremities with some light surface soiling and water-staining, else good condition, 350 by 470 mm.; framed and glazed A rare ephemeral item, probably issued by the Iranian Ministry of Culture on behalf of the Royal Pahlavi household, informing the general public of the engagement between Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi and Princess Fawzia Faud of Egypt. The engagement took place in the Abdin Palace in Cairo on 30 March 1938, followed by a wedding (also in Cairo) on 23 April the same year. This was the Shah's first marriage, and the wedding was a political one intended to strengthen the ties between the Iranian and Egyptian courts, attracting controversy in the process as it united a Sunni royal Princess with a Shi'a royal Crown Prince. The couple had a daughter together, Princess Shahnaz Pahlavi, before they became estranged and eventually divorced in 1948.
