Bewick and Son Date: 1818 Description: xxiv, 376 pp. Illustrated with hundreds of wood engravings by Thomas Bewick (8vo) 8x4¾, full decorative morocco by Kelly, fore-edge painting, all edges gilt. First Bewick Edition. With wonderful fore-edge painting depicting the fable of the Fox and the Crow (in which the Fox flatters the Crow into dropping her morsel of meat), in a beautiful landscape with castle in the distance. This copy also with armorial bookplate of Walter S. Carpenter, Jr.; and an old photograph of a portrait of Bewick mounted opposite title-page. Aesop's Fables is one of Bewick's most-beloved accomplishments, and represents a high point in English wood engraving. Lot Amendments Condition: Light wear to edges and joints; front flyleaves foxed and with paper clip stain; very good or better. Item number: 157197
