The first American orbital flight, views of the recovery Mercury-Atlas 6, 20 Feb 1962 Four vintage gelatin silver prints on fibre-based paper, 25.3 x 20.5 cm (10 x 8 in), two with NASA captions numbered 62-MA6-113 and 62-MA6-118 on verso Footnote: Glenn is seen on board recovery ship USS NOA following his triumphant first US orbital flight on February 20, 1962. Glenn was still inside his Friendship 7 spacecraft when it was hoisted on board USS NOA. 'During the flight, the spacecraft attained a maximum velocity in excess of 28,000 km/hour and an altitude of about 260 km. The capsule reentered after completing three orbits, coming down in the Atlantic Ocean some 1,300 km southeast of Bermuda. The duration of the flight was 4 hours 55 minutes and 23 seconds during which Glenn travelled over 121,000 km. After splashdown, the Mercury capsule with its pilot still inside were picked up after 21 minutes in the water and returned by helicopter to the destroyer USS Noa' ( spacecraft/display.action?id=1962-003A)
