THE FOLLOWING LOT WILL BE SOLD IN AID OF THE UKRAINE APPEAL CRAIG CAMPBELL (SCOTTISH b.1960) MY MYKOLAIV CITY OF TEARS & PRIDE Oil on canvas, signed lower left, 152 x 91cm (60 x 36”) MY MYKOLAIV CITY OF TEARS AND PRIDE symbolises and captures Ukraine’s struggle in the present humanitarian crisis. Campbell references the southern Ukrainian city, Mykolaiv, and the destruction, pain and loss to inhabitants, and their families, held hostage in their own country. The Cyrillic script to the upper right of the painting translates to ‘Myklolaiv Heroes’. “I was compelled to create something that captured the pain and suffering of the people of Ukraine, especially the children, but most of all capture the strength and resolve of a very proud nation’ - Craig Campbell, artist Craig Campbell is one of Scotland’s leading portrait and figurative artists. In 2017, he was a finalist in the Scottish Portrait Awards. Born in Ayrshire, he studied at the Glasgow School of Art. Campbell often derives inspiration from Scotland’s abundant playing fields and golf courses, creating compelling and sought-after figurative works, recognisable portraits, sporting scenes, and desirable depictions of life in Scotland.
