THE FREEDOM OF THE BURGH OF HAMILTON, OCTOBER 1872 A Victorian Scottish Silver rectangular Freedom Casket, the sides and hinged domed cover repoussée, chased and engraved with a band of the Scottish thistle, the centre of the cover engraved with the arms of Hamilton within oak-leaf and acorn wreath and drapery, gilt interior, the inside of the base engraved 'Presented with the Freedom of the Burgh of Hamilton, to Henry M. Stanley Esquire, of New York, in acknowledgement of his noble services in relieving Dr. David Livingstone, when deserted and destitute in central Africa, 24th October 1872.', maker's mark of J. Muirhead & Son, Glasgow, 1872 8¼in. (21cm.) long, 16oz. (512gr.) Together with a manuscript vellum document from the council of the Burgh of Helensburgh signed by the Provost, date 31 s t October 1872, folded in its original red morocco wallet. One of the first (of many) accolades given to Stanley by towns and cities around the world. Stanley arrived in England in early August 1872 to enormous controversy, but when time allowed he specifically travelled up to Hamilton to meet the Livingstone family and relay information to them personally about his meeting with David Livingstone.
