The Gentleman's Magazine and Historical Chronicle.
London: Edward Cave, etc., 1736, 1737, 1740-45, 1748, 1752-54, 1784. 15 volumes plus one unbound supplement for 1770. 8vo (215 x 145 mm). Numerous maps and engraved views, many folding., Map of Philadelphia and Parts Adjacent present but torn. Contemporary calf. Condition : intermittent light staining and spotting, heavier in vol. for 1740, plates and maps often separating along folds; rebacked to style; volume for 1736 lacks covers and spine perished, volume for 1737 in worn half calf. [With:] The Harleian Miscellany: or, A Collection of Scarce, Curious and Entertaining Pamphlets… London: printed for T. Osborne, 1744-1746. 8 volumes, 4to (250 x 195 mm). Contemporary half-calf over marbled boards, gilt lettering pieces to spine. Condition : occasional light spotting and browning, creases to title-page of vol. I; joints and spines worn, lettering piece to vol. I defective. Provenance : Corbet Corbet (bookplate); Richard Corbet, Adderley (bookplate); from Blackwells, May 1977, £225. first edition . Hazen pp. 50-59; Courtney & Nichol Smith p. 15. [With:] The Copper Plate Magazine, or Monthly Cabinet of Picturesque Prints consisting of Sublime and Interesting Views in Great Britain and Ireland. London: Printed for Harrison and Co. & J. Walker [plates dated 1 February 1792 - 1 January 1793]. Small oblong 4to (206 x 288 mm.). Contemporary half calf and marbled boards, spine gilt with red morocco spine label, upper cover with red morocco gilt title label. Engraved title and numbers I-XIII containing 24 engraved views (the series was completed in 1802 with 250 views) by and after various artists. Condition : some minor spotting, mostly to text leaves, upper outer margin of plate XI (Farnham) stained. Provenance : John Cabell Riely (book label); from Pickering & Chatto, 1991. Sold not subject to return.
