Title: The Golfing Annual. 22 volumes Author: Bauchope, C. Robertson and John & David S. Duncan, editors Place: London Publisher: Horace Cox Date: 1889-1909 Description: The first twenty-two annual volumes, 1888-1909. Profusely illustrated with numerous plates from many nicely produced photographs (including portraits of the top golfers of the time: John Ball, Willie Park, H.H. Hilton, Harry Vardon, James Braid, J.H. Taylor, Old Tom Morris, Horace Hutchinson, Arnaud Massy, etc.), maps (most are folding, many with coloring by hand or lithographed), ads, etc. 7x4¾, publisher’s uniform gilt-decorated green cloth, lettered in gilt. Perhaps the most important golfing annual, certainly the most important recording of the golfing world during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Bauchope and Duncan’s truly epic series provides seemingly countless and definitely invaluable information on various golf clubs, events, results, players, history, stories and more for the game of golf chiefly in England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland. A nearly complete set, only the final volume not present. There were a total of 23 volumes published annually, from 1888 to 1910. According to Murdoch, the volumes were "very well edited and attractively produced, and each year would include, in addition to reviews of the year's championships, articles, poems and descriptions of well-known courses, accompanied by attractive maps showing the course with its hazards and topographical features." Contributions from leading golf authors include: Sir Walter Simpson, Horace Hutchinson, John Thomson Prof. Tait, H.S.C. Everard, W. Dalrymple, Rev. T.D. Miller, John Kerr, etc. C. Robertson Bauchope edited only the first volume in the series, John Bauchope edited one year himself, and David Scott Duncan edited the majority with 21 volumes. Murdoch 43; D&M 2600-2810; D&J G28810-G29440. Vol. II with the rubberstamps (pre-1900) of A. Jones Golf Club & Ball Maker (Oxford). Lot Amendments Condition: General edge wear, light soiling, nicks, rubs; some hinges tender or starting to crack, scattered foxing, a few of the maps with short tears; Vol. III title page corner with 3" chip that removed a rubberstamp; Vol. XX front hinge repaired; hinges cracked and dampstains to Vol. XXII (just good); most from very good to near fine. Rarely do complete or near complete sets found together and made available for sale. Item number: 179767
