Title: The History of Edinburgh, from the Earliest Accounts to the Year 1780...With an Appendix, Containing Creech's Fugitive Pieces; Notices of Recent Improvements; and Literary and Benevolent Societies, &c. and the Set of the City Author: Arnot, Hugo Place: Edinburgh Publisher: Thomas Turnbull Date: 1818 Description: xvi, 598, iv, 38, [1] pp. Large folding copper-engraved frontispiece map of Edinburgh and Leith including outlying areas (with the Bruntsfield Links written as "Burntfield Links" present as well as the large "Hill of Arthur's Seat"). 38 page section, "Set of the City of Edinburgh; with the Acts of Parliament and Council, Relative Thereto," bound in at the rear, as issued. 8¼x5, bound in full contemporary calf, gilt-lettered morocco spine label, page edges colored blue. Fourth Edition. Chapter II of the Third Book describes the amusements and entertainments of the Scots, including the Company of Golfers, which warrants a few paragraphs on pp. 276-277, in which are described the game’s history and rules (briefly) and the Company, with a list of medals an a few subscribers. There is also a lengthy and interesting footnote criticizing another book’s section on golf, including the demerits of playing the game at the top of a place called Arthur’s Seat. Copper-engraved armorial bookplate of Maclean of Ardgour. Lot Amendments Condition: Spine a bit darkened, joints starting to split, 2" stain to lower front board, light rubbing and edge wear; map with two large tears with archival paper repairs and one small clear tape repair on verso, front hinge with archival repairing, rear hinge starting to crack, slight darkening to text; else very good overall.
