Title: The Holy Bible Containing the Old Testament and the New: Newly Translated out of the originall Tongues, and with ye former translations diligently compared and revised, by his Majesties speciall command. Appointed to be read in Churches Author: Place: London Publisher: Printed by Tho. Buck and Roger Daniel Date: [1638] Description: Three parts in 1, The Holy Bible, preceded by The Book of Common Prayer, and followed by The Whole Book of Psalms. A-H6, I4 (-I4, a blank); [--]2 (blank leaf & engraved title-page), A-Z6, Aa-Za6, Aaa-Ggg6, Hhh4, Iii4, Kkk-Xxx6, Yyy4, A-R6, A-I6. Copper-engraved pictorial general title-page for the Bible. (folio) 36.5x23 cm. (14¼x9), 18th century full red morocco tooled in gilt with panel designs on both covers, spine elaborately tooled & lettered in gilt, raised bands, gilt inner dentelles, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. Textually important and superbly printed folio Bible in a striking early binding, with interesting provenance. As noted by A.S. Herbert, "In this edition... the work of correction begun in the folio Cambridge Bible of 1629 was carried further. The revisers took special pains to render uniform the use of italics; and they introduced a certain number of new readings... This remained the standard text until the publication of Dr. Paris' Cambridge edition of 1762..." With the bookplate of Thos. Milles Riddell, Esq.; four pages of period manuscript genealogical descriptions at front begin with a paragraph on Thos. Milles Riddell the younger, followed by descending Riddells, and there are two additional pages at rear. Thomas Milles Riddell, of Larbert, Stirlingshire, Scotland (1756-1796), is not to be confused with the Scotsman of the same name (but different birth and death dates) who apparently served as the model for the evil Lord Voldemort in J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter saga, though undoubtedly there is some connection.. Herbert 520. Lot Amendments Condition: Light rubbing to covers, joints cracked, corners showing, spine ends a bit chipped; leather reinforcements to hinges at endpapers, very good or better, contents quite clean, and attractive copy.
