The Horace Brown Medal. A gold medal awarded to Sir William Waters Butler, the obvese with a bust of Horace Brown facing right and the legend 'Horace Tabberer Brown, LL.D., F.R.S., F.I.C.', makers initials FB, reverse showing barley and wheat with raised inscription 'The Horace Brown Medal Awarded by the Institute of Brewing' engraved 'Sir William Waters Butler, Bart 1937', 56mm diameter, 114.8g, extremely fine in fitted leather display case, together with three related prize medals, comprising Birmingham & Midland silver gilt medal by John Moore the obverse with a bust of Sir William Siemens facing left, the reverse showing elevation of the building, enagraved around the rim 'William Water Butler, Practical Plane & Solid Geometery Theoretical & Applied Mechanics 1890, 67 mm diameter, 148.2g, cased, silver medal for the City and Guilds of London Institute Technical Education, the rim engraved 'William Waters Butler, Breadmaking, 1st Prize 1894, 51 mm diameter, cased plus a Science and Art Departent bronze medal presented to William Water Butler for Hygiene in 1890, 40 mm diameter, cased (Quantity: 4) Horace Tabberer Brown FRS (1848-1925) was a British chemist. He began his career working at the Worthington Brewery in 1866. His focus was to solve practical brewing problems by employing and developing fundamental scientific principles. His research work considered barley germination, beer microbiology, water composition, oxygen and fermentation, beer haze formation, wort composition and beer analysis. His career lasted over 50 years and he left his mark on virtually all areas of science as applied to brewing. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1889 and from 1890 onward studied the assimilation of Carbon dioxide in plants. He also established the Guinness Research Laboratory in Dublin in 1901. The Institute of Brewing and Distilling awards the Horace Brown Medal to an eminent scientist every three years. The winner is invited to give a lecture called the "Horace Brown Medal lecture". Sir William Waters Butler, Bart (1866-1939) was born in Birmingham and educated at King Edwards Grammar School, Birmingham. He joined his father's brewery business which was later amalgamated and became Mitchells and Butlers Ltd, Butler was Chairman and Managing Director of this business along with Chairman of Birmingham Cold Storage Ltd, President of the Institute of Brewing from 1905, and Chairman of the Brewer's Society from 1908. In 1937 he assisted financially to the School of Brewing a Model Brewery to be used for experimental work and was a generous benefactor throughout Birmingham.
