(Kamstra, Jerry) The Jerry Kamstra collection of Dr. Stevanne Auerbach Place Published: Various places Date Published: Various dates Description: Large collection of Jerry Kamstra ephemera from the estate of Dr. Stevanne Auerbach, including numerous photographs, a large collection of correspondence, manuscripts in various states, a spiral notebook with numerous original drawings, and various other ephemera. In all, about 2 full banker's boxes worth of material. Stevanne Auerbach (1938-2022), also known as Dr. Toy, was an American educator, child development expert, writer and toyologist, best known for being an expert on as well as an advocate of toys, play, and the toy industry. She was named one of seven Wonder Women of Toys in 2007 by Women in Toys and Playthings magazine. She made several public appearances each year to promote her causes, which include building greater awareness in parents of their essential role as play tutors for their children, the educational, and many other benefits of play, and encouraging the enhancement of play value and high standards of quality, safety, and protection of creativity in toys within the toy industry. She was friend and correspondent of R. Crumb as well as Jerry Kamstra, Walter Mondale, and others. Comprises: Two autographed copies of Weed. (Different editions), plus two more without autographs. Three first edition copies of The Frisco Kid, one autographed and signed to “Gordito,” one simply autographed by Jerry Kamstra. (Note that the Gordito copy has Stevanne’s name in her handwriting, identified by her husband, in the middle of the 1976 inscription.) A working manuscript of Big Sur and the Sour Grapes of Henry Miller, with post-its indicating passages he wanted Stevanne to look at closely or which she inserted to discuss with him. Bound xeroxed manus of Ziggza the Golden Serpent, A Detective Novel by Jerry Kamstra with Chuy Fuon, “Copy Number 8,” 1988, with personalized inscription for Stevanne and extra illustrations. Manuscript of proposal to Jelly Belly for his children’s project, The Adventures of Jimmy Jellybean, with materials Stevanne used as part of her approach to the company on Kamstra’s behalf. Four copies of the Kamstra-edited (with his illustrations) of the Henry Miller Memorial Library Review (no.) 2. Three hand-bound copies of Satori in Santa Cruz: Autobiographical Ruminations by Jerry Kamstra, two personally inscribed to Stevanne and Ralph. Illustrated poetry broadside of “Every Alley Needs an Old VW Van,” inscribed to Stevanne and Ralph. Don't Kid Around with Jellybeans. Written and illustrated by Kamstra as "Shem the Penman."
