Title: The Letter of Amerigo Vespucci, Describing His Four Voyages to the New World, 1497-1504 Author: Vespucci, Amerigo Place: San Francisco Publisher: The Book Club of California Date: 1926 Description: Introduction by Oscar Lewis. Illustrated with a hand-colored title page map, decorative initials, head and tail pieces adapted by Valenti Angelo from contemporary sources. (4to), 31x22.5 cm (12¼x8¾"), full vellum, hand-lettered spine, slipcase. No. 152 of 250 copies printed by the Grabhorn Press. This copy from the library of Arthur M. Ellis, original member and chairman of The Zamorano Club of Los Angeles, with his signature on the front pastedown. The text follows a translation of the original Italian edition published by Pietro Pacini at Florence in 1505 or 1506. This was the first book illustrated by Valenti Angelo for the press. GB 85; BCC 26. Lot Amendments Condition: Fair amount of wear to slipcase with splits to bottom edge and spine detached but present, some wear and darkening to vellum as is common, with a few abraded areas on rear cover; rippling to interior; very good.
