Title: The Man with the Hoe Author: Markham, Edwin Place: San Francisco Publisher: The Book Club of California Date: 1916 Description: Frontispiece portrait & decorations by Ray Coyle. (4to), 28.5x20 cm (11¼x7¾'), cloth-backed blue boards, printed paper spine label. No. 21 of 300 copies printed by John Henry Nash Accompanying the book is the rare photograph by Gabriel Moulin of Millet’s famous picture which inspired the poem. This is tipped in a four-page sepia folder with text on the first page within a floral border in blue, rules in gold, printed by John Henry Nash As the folder for the Moulin photograph is a trifle larger than the book itself it could not be laid in. Consequently it got separated from the parent volume and mislaid; hence its scarcity today. Also laid in is a facsimile letter from Markham to Albert M. Bender, asking that a change “after all these years” be made in The Man with the Hoe. This copy with the decorative bookplate of Alfred I. Esberg, former director and vice-president of the California Historical Society. On the front pastedown above the bookplate is a drawing in pen of a monkey-like creature, artist unknown. This is a rare copy of BCC's second book with the folder and photograph included. Lot Amendments Condition: Light wear to boards with some toning to edges; some edge wear to folder with small closed tear to top front corner; very good. Item number: 283908
