Title: The Mystery of Edwin Drood Author: Dickens, Charles Place: London Publisher: Chapman & Hall Date: 1870 Description: viii, 190 pp. Engraved frontispiece portrait and title-page vignette and 12 plates after drawings by S. Luke Fildes Original front and rear wrappers and the Dickens Advertisers of the six parts bound in at rear. 8vo. Full crushed crimson morocco, spine decoratively tooled & lettered in gilt, gilt-ruled raised bands, covers triple-gilt-ruled, marbled endpapers, gilt-ruled turn-ins, all edges gilt; bound by Root and Son. First Edition, bound from the parts. Dickens died hours after completing Part Vi--or less than a third--of this mystery, leaving not a single useful clue regarding the progress of the crimes and intrigues. Lacks pages 191/192 along with ads for editions of Dickens's works, as well as all the rear ads; price at top of front wrapper of Part VI (which might have had a sticker) trimmed away; but an attractive copy. Hatton & Cleaver, p. 373-384; Woolf 1805. Lot Amendments Condition: Joints and hinges tender, head of spine slightly chipped, top margin of rear board sunned; occasional light foxing; else very good or better. Item number: 185665
