Her novel One of Ours, set during WWI, won her the Pulitzer Prize. In an attempt to escape the tuberculosis outbreaks in their native Virginia, the Cathers moved to Nebraska when Willa was nine years old. The environment and frontier attitude of the Plains had a profound impact on the youngster. During her years at the University of Nebraska, she published essays and other contribution, many to the Nebraska State Journal. Although her original intention was to become a doctor, she graduated from the University in 1894 with a degree in English. Her career was primarily one of periodical writer and editor, with novels published occasionally. She worked first in Pittsburgh, then moved to New York in 1906 where she remained until her death in 1947. Cather never married, and her most significant friendships were with women, although it is unknown if this included sexual relationships. Provenance: The John Baxter Black Estate, Mansfield, OH Condition: Excellent, near-new condition. A few with very minor corner bumping.
