(folio) 32.7x21 cm (13x8¼"), period calf, rebacked with modern calf, new endpapers. First Edition in English. Philosophical writings by the first century Greek historian most noted for his "Lives of the Noble Greeks and Romans." Plutarch treats of the creation of the soul, "vertuous" deeds of women, brotherly love, oracles, music, etc., "translated out of Greeke into English, and conferred with the Latine translations and the French, by Philemon Holland of Coventrie, Doctor in Physicke; whereunto are annexed the summaries necessary to be read before every treatise." STC 20063. Lacking the final leaf, 6F6, which is the second of two leaves of errata. Lot Amendments Condition: Some rubbing to covers; title-page mounted on backing, lacking top corner and lower quarter, affecting imprint with is supplied in ink; stains from ink(?) to various leaves within, about a half-dozen in all, light dampstain to lower gutter corners at the beginning; else very good.
