THE QUEEN AND THE DUKE OF EDINBURGH ARRIVING ON IRISH SOIL Michael Hanrahan (b.1951)
Signature: signed lower left Medium: acrylic on board Dimensions: 46 by 36cm., 18 by 14in. Tuesday 17 May 2011 marked the start of the historic Royal State visit to Ireland of Queen Elizabeth II and her husband Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh. This was the first visit by the British mo... onarch to the 26 southern counties of Ireland since independence in 1922. Michael Hanrahan was the only artist officially accredited to the visit and he produced a series of paintings which are unique mementoes of the momentous occasion. Following the visit, Queen Elizabeth’s Private Secretary corresponded with Hanrahan and it was agreed that a gift of a painting would be accepted into the Royal Collection at Buckingham Palace to commemorate her State Visit. The Queen and the President at the Garden of Remembrance shows the poignant moment when both heads of state attended a wreath-laying ceremony in the Dublin memorial garden dedicated to the men and women who died in the struggle for Irish freedom. Before it was taken to Buckingham Palace, the painting went on public display at Whyte’s and was the subject of much media attention. Hanrahan travelled to London with his family to personally present his work to the Queen’s Private Secretary. The artist has also specially created a painting of President McAleese welcoming the royal party to Áras an Uachtaráin, which the President is delighted to accept for her collection, and which will be presented to her at a private ceremony in October. Michael Hanrahan is devoted to painting the Irish landscape and retired from a career in banking to pursue his passion full-time, studying first at the National College of Art and Design, and later the Burren College of Art and the Lisdoonvarna Painting Centre. He has trained under Trevor Geoghegan, Fergal Flanagan, James Flack and Dorothee Roberts, learning to capture light and atmosphere through the medium of oil and watercolour. In addition to the Royal Collection, Hanrahan’s work can be found in numerous other collections including the Kennedy Collection. Boston, Massachusetts. Hanrahan has garnered other distinguished commissions to date including official artist for the All-Ireland Hurling Final in Croke Park in September 2010 and Russia versus Ireland in the European Football Championship at the Aviva Stadium in 2010. Serendipitously, in spring 2010 Hanrahan was appointed to the desirable position of Art Instructor aboard the Cunard Cruise Liners a post which has afforded him worldwide travel, experience and exposure, on the Queen Mary 2, the Queen Victoria and the Queen Elizabeth. Michael Hanrahan, who lives in Lahinch and works in a studio at the Courthouse Gallery in Ennistymon, is the only living Irish artist now represented in the Royal Collection more
