THE RESURRECTION. LARGE HISTORIATED INITIAL 'R' cut from an ILLUMINATED CHOIRBOOK ON VELLUM [Southern Germany, Augsburg? ca. 1500] Initial 140 x 140 mm, on the recto of a portion of a leaf 240 x 325mm. Initial "R" made up of foliage and intertwined branches of trees of raised gold on pink scrolled ground, containing the figure of Christ Victorious holding his banner and hovering above the tomb. Three guards below, one asleep, another kneeling unconcernedly, the third raising his arm towards Christ. In a green landscape with trees, at back houses and a church. Surrounded by 5 staves of music on four red lines with text in a gothic hand. Border of coloured flowers and leaves, including also a bird. The leaf is numbered 'cxli' in red. Five staves of music on verso. The text initiates the Introit for the feast of the Resurrection 'Resurrexi et adhuc tecum sum'.
