THE TILLER FROM THE BOAT "THE AFRICAN QUEEN", THE AFRICAN QUEEN , IFD 1951 The boat tiller from The African Queen, Charlie Allnut's boat in the classic film of the same title. Director John Huston gave the tiller to Katherine Hepburn as a gift at the end of filming. The tiller is 12¾ inches long and made of ash; the brass band around the top of the upper handle is inscribed "To Katie With enduring affection from the "African Queen" May-September 1951. Humphrey Bogart won the 1951 Academy Award for Best Actor for his portrayal of Allnut the hobo river trader. An American film classic, featuring the unlikely rescue and romance of Allnut and prim missionary Rose Sayer, brilliantly portrayed by Katherine Hepburn. The tiller is framed with a black and white photograph of Bogart and Hepburn from the film, and a handwritten not on Ms. Hepburn's personal stationery that reads "My Thanks, Katherine Hepburn. This was given to me by John Huston on the completion of The African Queen--and it was the short tiller we used at times during the making of the picture--I trust that the inscription in is gold-- Note: This item was originally donated by Ms. Hepburn to benefit the Actor's Fund.
