The Works of Aristotle, translated from the Greek. With copious elucidations from the rest of his Greek commentators, viz. Alexander Aphrodisiensis, Syrianus, Ammonius Hermaeas, Priscianus, Olympiodorus, Simplicius, &c. Author: Aristotle Place: London Publisher: Printed for the Translator... by Robert Wilks Date: 1812 Description: 11 volumes. Translated by Thomas Taylor Most volumes with a general title dated 1812, together with separate dated title pages. (4to) 30x23 cm (11¾x9"), period calf ruled in gilt, rebacked with later calf, raised spine bands, morocco lettering pieces. One fifty sets. First Edition in English of the collected works. One of only 50 sets printed. A choice copy of Thomas Taylor’s monumental translation of Aristotle, comprising all nine volumes of the complete works together with two additional supplementary volumes (not always present); signed by Taylor in volumes 1 and 4. Only a small number of Aristotle’s works (e.g. The Ethics, Rhetorics, etc.) had been translated in advance of Taylor, and the present set contains the first translations into English of all of Aristotle’s scientific and logical texts. Taylor’s edition is especially important both for containing extensive annotations drawn from the great Alexandrian commentators on Aristotle (never previously translated), and for seeking to demonstrate the harmony of Aristotle’s thought with Plato. The two supplementary volumes comprise the 1801 first edition in English of the Metaphysics (somewhat different in form than the Metaphysics translation found in the 9-volume set), together with Taylor’s original treatise “A Dissertation on the Works of Aristotle.” Privately printed “For the Author” in only a small number of copies for presentation purposes, Taylor’s Aristotle was not available for public sale, and the work is accordingly very rare in commerce. V. 1. The Organon. 1807. V 2. The Rhetoric, poetic and Nichomachean ethics. 1811. V. 3. The Great ethics, the Eudemian ethics, the Politics, and Economics. 1811. V. 4. The Physics. 1806. V. 5. On the heavens. On generation and corruption. On meteors. 1807. V. 6. The History of animals. On physiognomy. 1809 V. 7. On the parts and progressive motion of animals. The Problems. On indivisible lines.1810. V. 8. On the soul. On sense and sensibles. On memory and reminiscence. On sleep and wakefulness. On dreams. On divination by sleep. On the common motion of animals. On the generation of animals. On length and shortness of life. On youth and old age, life and death. On respiration. 1808 V. 9. The Metaphysics. Against the dogmas of Xenophanes, Zeno, and Gorgias. The Mechanical problem. The Fragment on audibles. On the world. To Alexander the Great. On the virtues and vices. 1812. V. 10. The Metaphysics of Aristotle. 1801 V. 11. Taylor. A Dissertation on the Philosophy of Aristotle, in Four Books. 1812.
