Third Albany Edition. An early collected edition, containing Paine's Common Sense, Rights of Man and various other letters and essays. The first Albany edition was published in 1792. Howes P34; Evans 27466. With the 1801 ownership signature of Joseph Goodwin of Lenox, Massachusetts on the front endpaper and title page. Joseph Goodwin was born at Boston December 29, 1761, son of Benjamin Goodwin. He was living in Lenox as early as 1784, was bred a merchant and for a number of years was associated with William Walker in the mercantile and iron business at Lenox Dale. He held various town offices and represented Lenox in the General Court in 1800 and 1801. He was one of the Directors of the unfortunate Berkshire Bank, established at Pittsfield in 1807, and on the failure of that institution, the Directors being held personally liable, was, with his fellow Directors, committed to jail and peculiarly ruined. He removed to Hudson, N. Y. about 1814, and was there engaged in business with varying success, until his death November 5, 1822.
