Early 19th-century straight-grained blue morocco gilt by Bozerian Jeune, covers with wide roll-tool border within double fillets and with wheeling star at corners, spine in compartments with raised bands, two directly lettered, the remainder with repeated floral tooling on a pointillé ground, marbled endpapers, limp vellum inner wrappers, gilt edges, pink silk marker (joints and corners rubbed, scuff marks affecting lower border of upper cover). Aldus's third book containing the EDITIO PRINCEPS of twelve Theocritean idylls, Theognis, sentences of the Seven Sages, Hesiod's Theogony and Heracles' Shield; the FIRST EDITION IN GREEK of Cato's distichs; second edition in Greek of eighteen Theocritean idylls and Hesiod's Works and Days (first published at Milan ca. 1480), also of the Pythagorean golden verses and Phocylides (first published in the Aldine Lascaris; HC 9924). Second state with corrected setting of quires F (two outermost sheets) and G, blank G6v being replaced by the poem on the death of Adonis.
