Super-chancery 2 o (308 x 211mm). Collation: a-z 10 A-H 10 (a1 blank, a2r text, H2v colophon, printer's device printed in red [Kristeller 237], H3r table, H10r quire register, H10v blank). 310 leaves (including first blank). 56 lines and head-line, double column. Gothic types 5:150 (head-lines), 6:74 (text), 9:140 (headings) and 68 (sheet E4). Opening 16-line initial M in liqued gold filled with light green and mauve modelled foliate decoartion, incorporating a central amorial shield with various emblems including a bellow, a dice and a snake, corners with white penwork decoration of hairline stems and flowers on blue and mauve ground, penwork marginal extentions in red and blue, Lombard initials and paragraph marks supplied in red and blue, contemporary manuscript notations bound in at end. (E8 torn, with old repair affecting a few letters, some minor worming at beginning and end.) Contemporary Westphalian calf, central panel divided into lozenges and triangles by intersecting triple fillets each filed with various hand-tools (spine almost vanished, bands still very strong, wear to edges, clasps lacking). Herbort's establishment was one of the largest in Europe at the time, with all of his work for the consituted firm of Johannes de Colonia et Nicolaus Jensen et Socii executed with Jensonian types (they had become their property upon Jenson's death). Herbort's connection with the Company evidently ceased with the completion of the Duns Scotus of November 1481, after which the types reverted to the Company. BMC V:301; Goff T-171; Proctor 4680.
