Through a succession of mergers and acquisitions he became a partner and managing director of the Ebbw Vale ironworks in 1844. He was innovative in his approach to these evolving industries, but his commercial judgment was increasingly called into question in his later career, and he eventually retired to Cheltenham in the late 1870s.
