[Thomas Brown, Engineer], scarce, proof before all letters of the full-length portrait, standing in front of the Ebbw Vale ironworks, of which he was the managing director, mezzotint on chine appliqué, 745 x 450mm., a strong impression, light marginal surface dust, in a broad veneer frame, glazed, [c.1850]. *** Merthyr Tydfil born Thomas Brown (1803-1884) was involved in the Welsh coal mining and iron industries throughout his career. Through a succession of mergers and acquisitions he became a partner and managing director of the Ebbw Vale ironworks in 1844. He was innovative in his approach to these evolving industries, but his commercial judgment was increasingly called into question in his later career, and he eventually retired to Cheltenham in the late 1870s.
