(43.5 x 70.2 cm.)FootnotesProvenance Sale, Bill Hood & Sons Art & Antiques, Delray Beach, Florida, June 7, 2016, lot 263. (as View of a Castle - sailboat and man fishing in foreground) Acquired at the above sale by the present owner. Thomas Doughty's Windsor Castle was inspired by the artist's travels in Europe from the fall of 1845 to the spring of 1847, first living in London where he resided at 3 Park Place, Regent's Park and then in Paris. Based on exhibition records of the British Institution and the Society of British Artist's, Doughty sketched and painted his surroundings in England to a greater degree than when he first visited the country in the fall of 1837. Doughty painted three known versions of Windsor Castle, the first being in 1845. The work was met with great success when he exhibited it at the British Institution and subsequently sold it for $2,500. Realizing his success, Doughty painted two other versions in 1847 and circa 1847-48.
