Lawrence's mother's) hand, 'A lock of my dear Ned's hair cut off when he was two years', framed and glazed (for H.W. Bailey -- Bristol framer's label); [ together with :] J.A.R. MARRIOTT. Contemporary gilt red calf prize binding, upper board with gilt school armorial and legend 'THE EARL OF JERSEY'S ESSAY PRIZE 1907' (water-damaged, minor losses), together with a letter from Montagu Robert Lawrence (Lawrence's older brother) presenting it to Herbert Wilson Bailey ('We think that you will value it in memory of him', Boars Hill, Oxford, 19 December 1951; [ and :] The Holy Bible . Oxford: The University Press, [s.a.]. 16° (139 x 97mm). Original limp roan, gilt edges (lightly worn). Provenance : inscribed by Sarah Lawrence to T.E. Lawrence's younger brother, 'Frank H[elier] Lawrence A gift from his mother, Feb[ruary] 7, 1901', with loosely-inserted verses in the hand of Montagu Lawrence. A LOCK OF LAWRENCE'S HAIR, presumably given to H.W. Bailey by Sarah or Montagu Lawrence; it resembles one now in Dorset County Museum, sent by Sarah Lawrence to Thomas Hardy's sister-in-law, Eva Dugdale, on 6 March 1939 with a note ('I am sending you a lock of dear Ned's hair cut off when he was almost two years old. You remember he had a very thick head of hair'. J. Wilson. T.E. Lawrence , National Portrait Gallery Publications, 1988, p.8). The prize volume was awarded to Lawrence as the English Essay Prize in the Midsummer Examination at the City of Oxford High School (The Earl of Jersey's Essay Prize) in June 1907, during his last term. He shared the first place in English Language and Literature in the Senior Oxford Local Examinations, which were a prerequisite for entrance to university, and went to Jesus College as an exhibitioner to read history in October 1907. The bible belonged to Frank Lawrence (1893-1915), the fourth of the five Lawrence sons, who was an undergraduate when he enlisted in 1914 and was killed in France on the Western Front the following May. Montagu Robert ('Bob') Lawrence (1885-1971), the eldest son, also served in France, before becoming a missionary in China. (3)
