Three 19th-Century monocular microscopes, two in cases See Colour Illustration A lacquered-brass and black enamelled monocular microscope signed by SWIFT & SON LONDON . The barrel has rack and pinion focusing with micrometer fine adjustment, sliding aperture adjustment (with two settings), a sliding prism mount and a second sliding lens mount. A collar at the base of the barrel rotates to reveal a light aperture above the double nosepiece. The circular stage has a degree scale around the circumference, substage condensor and plano-concave mirror. The instrument tilts on an axis between two uprights to the black enamelled U-shaped foot. In the fitted wooden carrying case are one eyepiece and Swift 1in. and ¼in. objectives in brass canisters. The case has an iron carrying handle -- 38.1cm. (15in.) wide ; and a large polished brass monocular microscope with rack and pinion focusing, micrometer fine adjustment, simple stage, substage condensor mount and plano-concave mirror, raised on a black-enamelled Y-shaped foot, with a brass plaque for J.A. PICKLES . It is contained in a wooden carrying case along with a brass table-standing microscope lamp with a lens and burner attachment. The case has a key and a modern sparkled amber carrying handle -- 38.8cm. (15¼in.) high and a lacquered-brass and grey-enamelled monocular microscope by W. WATSON & SONS 313 High Holborn LONDON . The barrel has rack and pinion adjustment to the graduated eyepiece tube and rack and pinion focusing and micrometer fine adjustment to the main barrel. Below the mechanical stage a a condensor mount and plano-concave mirror. The instrument tilts on an axis on a raised tripod stand. (3)
