These large prints were likely created for the World Columbian Exposition in Chicago in 1893. Lorrin Thurston, who was born in Hawaii and fluent in the language, commissioned the photos and publication of the book to promote tourism to the island. He appeared at both the World Columbian Exposition and the San Francisco Midwinter Fair in 1894-1895.
