THURSTON, LORRIN ANDREWS. 1858-1931. Vistas of Hawaii: Cocoanut Grove at the Home of Princess Kaiulani, Honolulu. St. Joseph, MI: Chicago Photo Gravure Co. for W.F. Sesser, [1891]. Hand-colored photogravure, 330 x 397 mm (image area), decorative border, printed caption, with ornate title Vistas of Hawaii-the Paradise of the Pacific printed in lower margin, matted. Very light spotting. Separately printed large format images from a series published in 1891 in a quarto volume. These large prints were likely created for the World Columbian Exposition in Chicago in 1893. Lorrin Thurston, who was born in Hawaii and fluent in the language, commissioned the photos and publication of the book to promote tourism to the island. He appeared at both the World Columbian Exposition and the San Francisco Midwinter Fair in 1894-1895.
