Russell Sage was a self-taught entrepreneur who began his career at his brother's Troy, New York grocery store. By the age of 21, he was able to buy the store, only to sell it in 1839 and use the profits to set up a wholesale shipping trade along the Hudson River. Active in local politics, he then served in the US House of Representatives, 1853-1857. Moving to New York City in the 1860's, he made his fortune on Wall Street investing notably in railroad stocks. More than many of his contemporaries, he earned a reputation as a miser. Olivia Slocum married him in 1869. Upon her husband's death, she inherited his $70 million fortune and, in contrast, devoted the rest of her life to philanthropy.
