Title: [A Book of Nonsense] Author: [Lear, Edward] (1812-1888) Place: [London] Publisher: [Frederick Warne & Co.] Date: [1866] Description: With 83 leaves with hand-colored wood engravings and text, on recto sides only. Illustrations based on the woodblocks made by the Brothers Dalziel. (Oblong 8vo) 5½x9, bound in late nineteenth century quarter brown morocco and patterned paper over boards, light brown endpapers. Lear’s extremely scarce and highly sought after humorous book of nonsense and limericks with delightful illustrations, published in 1866. Artwork after the Dalziel brothers, who are among the most admired and top engravers during the second half of the nineteenth century London. The book begins at page 9 and ends at page 108; lacks title and some of the pages. The following pages not present: 11, 14, 28-29, 33, 35-38, 41, 46, 48, 63, 84-85, and 99. Also, pages 59 and 62 each with a large piece missing to upper corner (59 with text and illustration not harmed, 62 with part of illustration affected). Lot Amendments Condition: Binding well worn, shaken; several pages with chips and tears most of those are expertly mended with paper on verso, finger-soiling, scattered creases; good to very good.
