Title: A Clockwork Orange Author: Burgess, Anthony Place: London Publisher: Heinemann Date: [1962] Description: Black boards, spine lettered in gilt, pictorial jacket, housed in a custom green cloth folding clamshell box with gilt-lettered leather spine label and acid-free interior inserts. First Edition, First? (maybe second) Issue. Author's masterpiece and one of the most influential novels during the last half of the twentieth century. Presumed first issue in the original black boards; the jacket with approximately one inch margins before reaching the printed text. There are three issues: the first two were issued in black boards, the first issue jacket with a 16s printed price and the second with a 18s price; this copy has been price clipped with only a slight showing of the "1" in the price still partially visible. The third issue was published in purple boards with a decimal price sticker. Deals in layers of ultra-violence and is the basis for the 1971 Stanley Kubrick film, which was nominated for four Academy Awards. With three rubberstamps from the Library of Congress on the copyright page and verso of the contents page, one dated 1963. The Library of Congress, when placing their stamps on books, do so for American copyright, thus making this copy one of only a few (at most) for this title in their possession. Lot Amendments Condition: Slight wear to jacket (price clipped as mentioned above); minor shelf wear; near fine or better in like jacket - a clean and bright copy. Fine folding clamshell box. Item number: 154701
