Title: The Holy Bible Author: Place: Oxford Publisher: Printed at the University Press Date: 1935 Description: 2 volumes. xix, [iii], 576; [iv], 577-(1216), [1] pp. (Folio) 47x33 cm (18½x13") original laminated crimson cloth, spines lettered in gilt. No. 181 of 200 copies, designed by Bruce Rogers printed by John Johnson. This copy prepared for Arthur Edward Anderson of Winnetka, Illinois; with his name in illuminated calligraphic script on the colophon leaf at the rear of Volume 2. A fine copy of what is said to be "the finest Lectern Bible ever produced in English" (Herbert). Joseph Blumenthal in his Art of the Printed Book, refers to the these volumes as "The most important printed book of the twentieth century." Printing and the Mind of Man opines: “As a whole the Bruce Rogers Oxford edition ranks as the most monumental form given to the Bible since Baskerville printed his folio at Cambridge in 1763. The impression is admirably even. The calm splendour of the entire execution makes this Lectern Bible Rogers’ lasting and finest memorial.” Certainly the masterpiece of designer Bruce Rogers he himself considered the volume to be "from beginning to end . . . the finest and most consistent example of composition and make-up that has been produced in our day.” Copies of this large paper edition on hand-made paper rarely appear on the market, the most recent at auction being nearly a decade ago. Herbert 2249; Blumenthal, Art of the Printed Book, pp. 50--51. Printing and the Mind of Man 179; Haas, Bruce Rogers 169. Lot Amendments Condition: A touch of rubbing to spine edges, some gentle scuffing to rear boards, browning to the edges of endpapers and preliminary and terminal blanks from contact with the cloth turn-ins (as typical); a fine copy of this monumental work.
