Signed in pencil and hand-carved of red-cedar, the mask is made in three pieces and carved with a movable jaw. The entire piece is painted in colors of black, red, and green and has accents of curvilinear copper plates and cedar braids, length 108.25 in. x height 25 in. dated in pencil, 1992 The mask depicts the mythical two-headed sea serpent that was important to the powers of a Kwakiutl warrior. This being could be summoned on command and had the ability to transform itself into a variety of things, including a self-propelled canoe. Tom Hunt born in Victoria, B. C. in 1964, is a member of a renown wood-carving family. Today, he lives in Fort Rupert and carves many traditional Northwest Coast objects--rattles, bowls, and masks and he also assists his uncle, Calvin Hunt with large totem poles. Condition: Excellent.
