The early 1960s was a challenging though exciting time for him. He had made the life-changing decision to settle in St Ives and paint fulltime. Yet it's notable that he produced a number of dark, brooding paintings during this period, such as this richly atmospheric meditation on winter. He was reflecting on his position as an exile - albeit his exile was voluntary.
