[Totti (Pompilio)] Ritratti ed Elogii di Capitani, FIRST EDITION, including errata leaf, engraved architectural frontispiece with military motifs and armorial coat of arms of the Duke of Modena Francesco d’Este, half title, woodcut floriated ornaments, 128 historical portraits including Turkish and Polish leaders, many signed by Pompilio Totti, some spotting and thumbing, ex libris to front pastedown, contemporary vellum over boards, ink title to spine, soiled and worm holed, joints weak, [IT\ICCU\VEAE\006272; BM STC 17th cent. Italian, p. 752; Melzi II, 479; Cicognara, 2118; Olschki Choix, 10450; Vinciana, 1492; Gamba 2709 ‘edizione pregevolissima’; Benezit XIII 746; not in Graesse or Brunet], 4to, Pompilio Totti libraro (Andrea Fei), Rome, 1635. *** First edition of this historical and iconographic gallery of famous people from 12th to 18th century, based on ‘Ritratto di cento capitani illustri’ (Rome, 1596) by Aliprando Caprioli. The text has been attributed to Giulio Roscio. Ll3 features the portrait of Charles de Longueval, not of Fabio Gallo. Colophon on p. 288, followed by biography and portrait of Francesco Colonna (the gathering was added by the printer at the end).
