Pegge (second work only, title inscribed by the author); Dr. James Forbes Young (compilor, numerous manuscript annotations, including manuscript 'half-title' at front: "Collectanea Tradescantia J.F.Y. 1852:3"); I. & F.W. Hosken (loosely inserted bookplate). A fascinating compilation of printed and manuscript material on the two John Tradescants, father and son, who were perhaps the most important early 17th-century English gardeners, nurserymen and collectors of natural curiosities. The present volume was assembled by one of the main participants in the successful campaign to restore the tombs of both John Tradescant junior and Elias Ashmole. In addition to what is probably the first printed account of an English museum, Dr. James Forbes Young here includes Ducarel's rare pamphlet (an offprint from the Philosophical Transactions , vol.LXIII), numerous cuttings relating to the Tradescants and a large group of letters from those concerned with the restoration of the tombs at St. Mary-at-Lambeth, including Sir William Jackson Hooker (1785-1865) of Kew, and G.P.White - the carver and mason who carried out the restoration. (extremities scuffed, spine label lacking). Provenance : John Brand (1744-1806, antiquary, bookplate, manuscript note 'Bought out of Payne's Catalge [sic.] March 9th. 1786- pr. 1-11-0 with two Heads'); unidentified armorial bookplate; John Hely-Hutchinson (bookplate, dated 1949). The second edition, with an interesting provenance. The wording of Brand's inscription may indicate that he inserted the two portraits (or 'Heads') when he bought the book from Payne in 1786.
