(African American, 1927-1944) Two academic studies regarding the African American slave trade in South America, and African American folklore, original scholarly printings of landmark academic studies Author: Faust, Arthur Huff; et al Place Published: New York and Durham, North Carolina Date Published: 1927 & 1944 Description: Two articles from American journals. Comprising: Fauset, Arthur Huff. Negro Folk Tales from the South (Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana). Journal of American Folk-Lore, July-September 1927, pp. 213-302. Original wrappers. Romero, Fernando; James Ferguson King; and Gonzalo Beltran. The Slave Trade and the Negro in South America; The Latin-American Republics and the Suppression of the Slave Trade; and The Slave Trade in Mexico. Hispanic American Historical Review, August 1944, pp. 368-431. The slave trade journal has rubberstamp of John E. Lockwood, chief legal advisor to the Rockefeller family and close friend of young Nelson Rockefeller, then wartime Assistant Secretary of State for Latin America. Two scarce scholarly journals with landmark African American academic studies. Fauset, an anthropologist, as well as a civil rights activist, Vice President of the National Negro Congress, was the first notable Black scholar to travel through the Southern states to gather oral recollections of African American folklore. His article, published during the Harlem Renaissance, was one of his first writings on the subject. The Hispanic Review issue included three separate studies on the slave trade in Latin America and Mexico, the first significant writings on an overlooked chapter of African-American history. Condition: Folk tales journal covers well-worn and detached with marginal chips on some pages; overall good or better.
