Title: Two Atlases bound together Author: Chiquet, Jacques & Pierre Du Val Place: Paris Publisher: Date: c.1719 & 1677 Description: Includes: Chiquet, Jacques. Le nouveau et curieux atlas géographique et historique, ou, Le divertissement des empereurs, roys, et princes. [3]-56, 4 leaves, incl. 23 copper-engraved maps hand-colored in outline; double-hemisphere of the heavens with constellations; 3 leaves of armillary spheres, globes and solar sysems. McLaughlin 191; Phillips 4279. Paris: Chereaneau, 1719. [bound with] Du Val, Pierre. Diverses cartes et tables pour la geographie ancienne, pour la chronologie, et pour les itineraires et voyages modernes. 3 parts in 1. [87] leaves incl. 52 (of 54) hand-colored copper-engraved maps. Phillips 3276 (citing 1669? edition). Paris: Chez l'Auteur... et Chez N. Langlois, 1677. Together, 2 atlases bound together. (oblong 4to) 8¼x11¼, early 20th century half morocco & cloth. Combination of two very interesting atlases. The Chiquet contains finely engraved maps of the world, continents, and various European countries, dated 1719. Two of the maps (the double-hemisphere world and North America) depict California as an island. The three-part Du Val atlas (which follows the Chiquet although the general title-page is bound at the front facing the Chiqueit title) had attractive maps of the Ancient world, chronological tables of events, and maps illustrating various voyages and explorations of modern times. Some sources indicate that the Chiquet as having 24 maps, but that count includes the chart of the heavens, which in this copy is not colored; it is missing a preliminary leaf, perhaps a half-title. The Duval is missing the final two maps, "Itineraire de France pour la route de Paris a Lion..." and "Itineraire d'Italie..."; otherwise believed to be complete, though its collation is complex. Lot Amendments Condition: Some scuffing to leather, circular stain to front cover; some moderate foxing, soiling and aging within, else very good. Item number: 193711
