Two Chinese Giltwood Figures of Guanyin 18th/19th Century Each seated in positions of royal ease on the back of a recumbent Buddhist lion and an elephant, dressed in sumptuously draped and layered robes, elaborate patterning throughout and on the hem, the serene face delicately painted in a downward expression beneath black hair gathered under a simple crown and falling over the shoulders, the lion and the elephant both with turned heads and with polychrome painted detailing, resting on rectangular plinths. Heights 12 3/4 inches. Provenance: John B. Coleman, Hotelier and founder of John B. Coleman & Co and the Jockey Club LLC New York. C
Figure on elephant: left hand missing. Two vertical cracks to lacquer on face. Small area of black loss on hair. Vertical lacquer cracking down back with associated areas of lifting and loss. Elephant head with areas of lacquer loss and old restoration. One tusk is loose. Body of elephant with scattered areas of lacquer loss. Base with areas of lacquer loss especially at corners. Figure on Lion: Right hand missing thumb, fore finger and middle finger. Left hand with crack to middle finger and fore finger. Loss to black on hair and part of headdress with loss. Scattered small losses to face lacquer. Scattered small areas of loss to back of robe. Lion has lost one ear. Scattered areas of possible restoration. Base with quite a bit of lacquer loss.
