TWO FINELY CARVED SOAPSTONE BOXES AND COVERS 18TH CENTURY The covers carved in low relief from a creamy beige and greyish colored soapstone in the form of Liu Hai on his three-legged toad, and a young boy seated atop a large lotus leaf and holding aloft a lotus blossom, each cover with traces of pigment, the boxes carved from a mottled reddish-white stone and finely incised and gilded around the exterior with three leafy floral sprays, the interiors similary carved and gilded with a single lotus scroll 2¼ in. and 2 5/16 in.
