Lot of 2 pipes. Light brown color wood. Overall max. width about 4.25 inches. Height of bowl 3 inches. Bowl is generally square shaped (with rounded edges, but the square is the general configuration of it) about 1.75 x 2. High relief carved with the entire underside and the projection at rear to hold the stem in the shape of a large human hand and (lower arm) holding up the bowl. Definitely well defined large American shield relief carved in front with what appears to be upper body with head and tops of wings of an eagle above it. Each side of pipe carved in high relief design of a leaf (large leaves) and branch motifs around which each has large relief letters, but very indistinct and worn difficult to make out. One side appears to read "Taken Jan. 1st." The material is what is most unusual. One of those names that can be made out on the right side is “B. Chase.” On the left "??chester." Very tiny typical soldier-carved (quite well done) light brown wood pipe. 1.5 inches overall width. Bowl stands 1 ½ inches high; bowl dia. 1 inch. Wide relief band around entire perimeter of bowl carved in high relief with large “CAMDEN APR. 9’th, 1862.” High relief center band running the full length of its back underside and front bearing high relief carved (neatly) wording “G. S. ALDEN. CO. G. D. GUARD.” Right side of pipe almost entire bowl beneath the word “CAMDEN” with low relief shield, band of stars at top, vertical stripes; and on left side of bowl large relief-carved American eagle, wings downward clutching sheaf of arrows in one claw and palm leaf and branch in the other. One possibility is Gilead S. Alden, who enlisted in Co. G, 89th NY Vols. in October 1861. He was discharged in November 1862, but would have been around in April. Provenance:Property of N. Flayderman & Co.
