Bookplate of a New York African-American collector The Beasley book is a comprehensive classic history, identifying forgotten African-Americans who played an important part in California history from the US “conquest” and Gold Rush through the Pan-Pacific Exposition and World War I. Thurman focused on several key figures and events, including the US Vice Consul in Spanish Monterey, the only Black member of the California Society of Pioneers, the first AME Church in San Francisco, the “father” of Black California education and the “mother” of California civil rights.
