American, ca 1808-11, unsigned. Each are almost side profiles, oil on panel, painted on a dark oval background, and placed in a (likely original) gilt frame; 9" high x 7.5" wide. Jacob Eichholtz (1776-1842) was born and raised in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. When he recorded in his day book, painting these simple profile portraits in 1809, he was still working in his trade of coppersmith. About 1811, with training from Gilbert Stuart one of America's master portrait painters of the time, he began to pursue painting full time. He later painted in Philadelphia from 1823 to his death in 1842. Provenance: Ex David Good Condition: Minor split (gentleman), both minor wear.
