United States Iron Clad Ram. Dictator. Designed by J. Ericsson.
New York: Endicott & Co. [c. 1864]. Hand-colored Lithograph (sheet size: 470 x 790 mm). Condition : two repaired tears in the margins, minor surface soiling, minor small chips in the lower margin. Matted. colored lithograph of a union ironclad. Designed by John Ericsson, the ironclad USS Dictator launched on 26 December 1863. The single-turret ironclad commanded two smoothbore 15” guns and was assigned to duty in the North Atlantic Blockading Squandron. The Dictator was sent to take part in the assault on Fort Fisher, but had to return to port with mechanical problems. She decommissioned to reserve on 5 September 1865 and finally sold for scrap in September 1883.
