(8vo) 17.7x11.3 cm (7x4½"), modern quarter dark brown leatherette with similarly covered boards, gilt spine title. Scarce edition; reissue of 1678 with new title page. Valerius Maximus, a Roman historian and contemporary of emperor Tiberius, collected anecdotes for the use of orators. The anecdotes are arranged in nine books according to subject: Book I: religion, omens, prodigies Book II: social customs Books III-VI: virtuous conduct (fortitude, moderation, humanity, etc.) Books VII-VIII: miscellaneous including good fortune, military stratagems, famous law-suits, eloquence, etc. Book IX: evil conduct. Lot Amendments Condition: Frontispiece top, bottom and gutter edge repaired; last leaf top edge repaired; worm holing in last few pages with some text affected; good or better. Lots sold without reserve are sold “as Is” and are not returnable under any circumstances.
