Autograph envelope cover signed as President ('U.S. Grant'), [?Washington, circa 1870] , to Hen. H. Gurley at Arlington House, Washington, one page, (76 x 149mm) , with printed heading 'From the President of the United States. Secretary (the latter crossed through), mounted on card with: -- Charles SUMNER (1811-1874). Autograph letter signed ('Charles Sumner') to Mr. Hopkins, [Washington], Senate Chamber, 17 April [18]56 , commenting on the books and pamphlets of Dr. Kane, which are not yet published, and praising the pursuit of the sciences, 4 pages, 8vo (187 x 123mm) , tipped onto card; with a carte-de-visite photograph portrait signed and 6 other manuscript items signed by P.J. Barnum, Edward Everett George B. McClellan, Wendell Phillips with photograph, William H. Prescott, and Edwin M. Stanten, all mounted on card; and 2 other manuscripts, one from Charles Wilkes commander of the U.S. Exploring Expedition. (4)
