Various Photographers (Album) c.1860s EUROPEAN NAVAL MILITARY COMMAND & THE INDIAN REBELLION OF 1857, A Fascinating Album of Photographs Relating to the European Naval Military Command & The Indian Rebellion of 1857, 4to brown morocco album, with the letters A.E.C embossed onto the front board, presumably referring to the compiler of the album; Anne Eugenia Chamberlain née Morgan (1785-1867), Second wife to the diplomat, Sir Henry Chamberlain 1st Baronet, Mother to William Charles Chamberlain (1818-1878) Rear Admiral of the Royal Navy. The album comprises of albumen prints in Carte de Visite format (155) with sitters including; The Chamberlain & Morgan extended families, Lord & Lady Otho Fitzgerald, Sir Vincent Corbett Admiral Byng, Sir W. Bowles RN K.C.B, French Admiral Jean Lugeol & Vice Admiral Jean-Baptiste Grivel, Captain Basil Hall RN, Sir Bromley, General Mildmay Fane, Lt. Gustave Visconti, Baron Peletier, with a manuscript inscription signed by Henry Chamberlain detailing Peletier’s activities at Waterloo, Colonel De Villiers, General Delamare and his home, Abdul Kadir, Dr Brewster, Arbuthnot Charles Guthrie and family, The British Royal Family, Princess Helena, Prince Christian of Schleswig-Holstein, Napoleon III and family, Photographers include Camille Silvy (16), followed by large albumen prints (5), two examples, approx. 205 x 180mm or reverse; the first titled in pencil lower margin; Officers of the 1st Bengal cavalry at Hindo Raos’ house. Doctor Wallace. Captain Bingham. Colonel Chamberlain. Lieutenant adjutant Cockburn. The second image; Native Officers of the 1st Bengal Company, Better Known as Skinners Irregular Horse. They are here taken on the Main Portch of the Hindoo Raos House in Delhi. Followed by 2 CDV format images showing the laying of the foundation stone of the Lawrence & Bayley Guard Memorial in Lucknow, May 1864, 1 image showing “Edith” on “Ned” at Lucknow, and a sliughtly larger albumen print of a Hill Station in the Punjab Himalayas, the next albumen print, by Bourne & Sheperd, c.1864, showing The Supreme Indian Council, Simla, image size, 226 x 152mm, with each sitter titled in manuscript, lower margin together with a few loose images including a large painted portrait, perhaps of Colonel Henry Norman (?), Military Secretary to India, a CDV by Fred Fisher of a Naval man, and another interesting loose image (approx 160 x 240mm) of a group including Colonel Norman Reference: Bayly, Christopher, The Raj: India and the British 1600-1947,, p. 311 Saywell, David; Simon, Jacob, Complete Illustrated Catalogue, 2004, p. 737 NPG P426
